Interest Opens for Indigenous Advisory Committee

Georges River Council

Georges River Council is inviting Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members to join its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee.

The Advisory Committee plays a vital role in strengthening relationships between Council and the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. It provides culturally informed advice on Council policies, plans and projects, and ensures that the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are heard in decision-making processes that affect their community.

The current membership of the Advisory Committee includes community members representing Bidjigal Traditional Custodians, the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, local Elders, the Uluru Statement from the Heart, community workers and residents who raise and provide guidance on issues important to the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the Georges River area.

The Committee is instrumental in implementing Council's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy and working with Council to shape and refine key initiatives that celebrate cultural knowledge and practices and promote truth-telling, healing, and reconciliation.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee is central to Council's commitment to reconciliation and cultural empowerment.

"We are proud to work alongside our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to build a future that respects cultural protocols, values diversity, and celebrates the oldest living cultures on earth.

"The Advisory Committee is a powerful platform for community members to share their knowledge, raise issues, and help shape Council's work in meaningful ways. I encourage all eligible community members to apply."

EOIs are open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who live, work or meet in the Georges River area and are passionate about community advocacy, cultural preservation, and collaboration. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit Council's website to learn more and submit their EOI. Applications close on Thursday 13 November 2025.
