International Literacy Day is celebrated on 8 September each year. Founded by UNESCO, it aims to remind us of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.
We know that reading at home is an important part of education for children. It can be one of the best ways to not only explore words, ideas and characters, but to establish an early love of books.
To celebrate International Literacy Day, we're pleased to announce Boroondara Library Service has launched a new online resource for parents. Tailored to 4 specific age groups, it provides parents of young children with reading advice, tips, and recommended book lists:
It's part of our efforts to Transform Boroondara and make sure that parents and children have access to the resources they need to develop and encourage early literacy skills.
According to UNESCO, across the world 773 million young people lack basic literacy skills today. Whether it's through access to resources or education tools, libraries can play a big role in ensuring that young people get a head start in terms of early literacy.
