Investigation into $200,000 copper cable theft - Camden PAC

Police are appealing for public assistance following the large-scale theft of copper from a housing estate in Sydney's south west.

Between 5pm on Thursday 27 February 2020 and 8am on Monday 9 March 2020, it is believed that over one kilometre of recently laid copper traffic signal cables was cut and removed from a housing estate on Northern Road, Oran Park.

Following this, between 12pm on Monday 9 March and 8am on Tuesday 10 March 2020, a further 1.5km of copper traffic signal cables was cut from a different section of the same housing estate.

The value of both of these thefts is believed to be over $200,000.

Both the matters were reported to police, with the Camden Police Area Command commencing an investigation into the theft.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious in the area at that time to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police are also urging local businesses to be vigilant, and to report any suspicious behaviour, with copper often sold to scrap metal dealers.
