The Tasmanian Liberal Government is partnering with local government to deliver a state-wide waste education and awareness initiative.
We are serious about reducing litter, increasing resource recovery and building our Circular Economy. This is why the Tasmanian Government is working with Rethink Waste to offer a centralised source of information for communities and businesses on how to reduce waste, and what materials can be recovered/recycled, where and when.
Rethink Waste is a collaboration of Tasmania's three Regional Waste Management Groups (Cradle Coast, Northern, and Southern Tasmania), supported by local government, providing a coordinated approach to a range of waste and resources recovery activities.
To support the strong work Rethink Waste is doing on the ground, the Tasmanian Liberal Government is investing a further $95,000 to address new issues and further expand their education and promotional campaigns across the state.
This additional funding will provide new campaign opportunities that include themes such as:
- recycling, and the minimisation of contamination;
- reducing litter and dumping;
- reducing food waste, and the promotion of organic waste collection services where available;
- considering recovered and recycled content when purchasing; and
- reducing the use of problematic and unnecessary plastics.
Importantly, this awareness initiative will ensure consistency of messaging and incorporate key Tasmanian Government information on the proposed waste levy and Container Refund Scheme, litter and reporting measures, as well as event guides and school program resources.
Grant funding has also been allocated to extend the Rethink Waste Tasmania website content to include West Coast and King Island Council areas, ensuring complete state coverage.
This partnership builds on the strong action that we are taking to tackle a broad range of waste management and resource recovery issues in Tasmania and further complement existing commitments being delivered by the Tasmanian Liberal Government, including the introduction of a Container Refund Scheme and statewide waste levy, support for commercial recycling and phasing out single use and problem plastics in Tasmania by 2025.
