Investing in Tasmania's world-class seafood industry

Guy Barnett,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

The Hodgman Liberal Government is a passionate supporter of our world class seafood industry which supports thousands of regional jobs and investment across the State.

That's why we provided a $2.3 million dollar assistance grant to help secure BioMar Group's $56 million state-of-the-art fish feed production facility in Wesley Vale.

BioMar in transforming an old panel mill into a state of the art facility, which once operational, will produce up to 110,000 tonnes of feed for domestic and international markets each year.

The project, expected to be completed in early 2020, is providing work for approximately 250 workers and will inject an estimated $65 million back into the Tasmanian economy during the construction phase alone.

Not only has BioMar chosen Tasmania as its latest site for development, but it has also committed to spending at least $1.5 million on research and development in the State over a five year period.

The Office of the Coordinator- General was been instrumental in securing this opportunity for Tasmania and worked with BioMar over an extensive period of time, to help facilitate this project.

This is a very exciting opportunity for North and North-West Tasmania and demonstrates significant confidence in the local economy, while supporting Tasmania's seafood industry.

The Hodgman Liberal Government's 2019-20 Budget is investing $13.8 million in our world class wild catch and farmed seafood sector.

As our economy continues to grow, the Budget supports and encourages initiatives that benefit all Tasmanians by delivering unprecedented infrastructure spending, and the State's largest ever budget for health and education.
