Tasmania's tourism businesses need increased financial assistance now.
Shadow Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events Rebecca White said the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania had today made it clear to the government more support was needed.
"Today we have seen the TICT join earlier calls from the TCCI for urgent increased financial assistance from the government," Ms White said.
"It has become incredibly clear that lockdowns in other jurisdictions are having a profound impact on Tasmania's tourism and tourism related businesses and increased support is desperately needed to help them get through this difficult time.
"For weeks now, Labor has called for a Tasmanian version of Job Saver, and once again we are calling on the government to act."
Ms White said the situation for these businesses is becoming more desperate by the day and it is time for Premier Peter Gutwein to make it clear to his Canberra colleagues why this support is so desperately needed.
"Last week, Acting Premier Jeremy Rockliff penned a letter to Canberra and the Premier this week said he had spoken to the Prime Minister about the urgent need to support Tasmanian jobs.
"ABS payroll jobs data shows more than 3,000 jobs - including around 1,300 in the tourism and hospitality sectors - have been lost in the two months since the border closures really started to bite.
"Premier Peter Gutwein said that he was speaking to the Prime Minister again this week so what's the outcome? Tasmanian businesses and workers need more than an assurance of a chat. They need action now."
