Joint Statement - Resignation of CEO

Law Council of Australia CEO, Jonathan Smithers, today announced his resignation from the peak body representing lawyers across Australia.

Law Council President, Arthur Moses SC, thanked Jonathan stating "On behalf of the board and our constituent body members I would like to thank Jonathan Smithers for his contribution to the legal profession in Australia over the last 3 years."

"Jonathan is leaving the Law Council of Australia following a period of significant transformation and growth in its work and influence.

"As the peak body we have benefited from his leadership of a highly experienced team who have together delivered expert advice to government, parliament and many other stakeholders over a very wide range of legal policy.

"Jonathan has also worked closely with the law societies and bar associations from the states and territories as Constituent Bodies of the Law Council and with many other stakeholders to build strong and enduring relationships."

Jonathan Smithers thanked the board and the Law Council Constituent Bodies for their support over the last 3 years. "It has been a privilege to work with so many highly engaged and expert leaders in the law across the country to achieve real and meaningful change to benefit all Australians and improve our advocacy internationally.

"I leave the Law Council at a time of great strength and have been very privileged to contribute to the extraordinary work carried out."

"I would also like to thank the staff of the Law Council Secretariat for the passion and dedication which they show through their work and for the benefit they bring to all Australians through strengthening of the rule of law in many diverse ways."
