Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, yesterday spoke with Cho Tae-yul, the Republic of Korea's Minister of Foreign Affairs and congratulated him on his recent appointment as minister.

Building on significant progress made in 2023 during the 60th anniversary of Canada-Korea relations, the ministers highlighted the importance to keep the momentum and agreed to work closely to implement our countries' shared vision, including through deepened people-to-people ties. The ministers also discussed regional, global peace and security challenges.

The ministers strongly condemned North Korea's continued missile launches and illicit weapons programs, which threaten security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Minister Joly reaffirmed Canada's commitment to continue working with the Republic of Korea and other partners to uphold the integrity of the UN Security Council resolutions and international law, including through Operation NEON.
