Keeping local children safe with free parent first-aid training
Free first aid training will be offered to Kingston parents thanks to a new pilot project by Kingston Council to improve the health and safety of local children.
Kingston Mayor Georgina Oxley said Council was keen to support new parents by training them in how to better respond to injuries and emergencies.
"By giving local parents stronger skills and confidence we can ensure young people who are injured and ill are well looked after," Cr Oxley said. "It could also help parents deal with minor issues themselves, rather than visiting hospital emergency departments for non-urgent care."
Cr Oxley said the training would be on offer to any Kingston parents, but training sessions would be located closest to areas of greatest need.
"We want to make first-aid training available to everyone by removing barriers including cost and transport," Cr Oxley said. "So, we will be holding free sessions close to Clayton, Clarinda, Oakleigh South and Chelsea."
A trial of the free parent first-aid training will be held sometime in 2020 to explore the level of community interest to determine whether ongoing funding will be provided.
