Keeping Our Farmers Farming And Our Exports Moving

The Hon Julie Collins MP
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

The Albanese Labor Government continues to work with farmers, fishers and producers to manage the impacts of the conflict in the Middle East.

We know the conflict is pushing up prices and putting pressure on Australians, that's why we're taking action to support farmers, keep our exports moving and make sure Australia's food system remains strong during this time of uncertainty.

More certainty for farmers, producers and exporters

In recognition of the current disruptions being experienced by Australia's farmers and producers the Government has taken a decision to defer the phased transition to full cost recovery for export regulatory services for one year until 1 July 2027.

The phased transition was originally set to commence from 1 July 2026, with today's deferral giving farmers and producers facing input cost pressures more certainty for the future.

Further action to help secure fertiliser

The Government is establishing a new Fertiliser Supply Working Group which will include representatives from key government agencies and industry organisations Fertilizer Australia and the National Farmers Federation.

This new Working Group builds on work already underway by Government and industry to improve the availability of fertiliser including:

  • Amending legislation to underwrite the purchase of fuel and fertiliser by the private sector
  • Working with the ACCC to monitor and coordinate fertiliser supply
  • Government and industry jointly engaging with alternative suppliers of fertiliser.

Support for farmers facing hardship

The Albanese Labor Government has practical support that is always available to ensure Australia's farmers and producers can access the support they need.

Since July 2022, the Government has invested over $1.29 billion in rural support and resilience funding, with over $980 million spent to directly support producers.

The Government has today opened the new Drought Hardship Loan for farmers and producers impacted by prolonged drought delivered through Regional Investment Corporation.

The Government recently unlocked further funding to support farmers and producers impacted by hardship through the Rural Financial Counselling Service.
