Kingborough Economic Surge as AFL Project Advances

Tasmanian Government

With a new High Performance Centre based at Kingston's Twin Ovals, the Kingborough community is set to experience an enormous boost to its local economy.

Following the site selection, development of concept plans and significant design work, the upcoming 2025-26 Budget will include $105 million to deliver the project which is expected to be completed by October 2027.

Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan said the Centre's investment is a key part of our once-in-a-generation project that will set up Tasmania for the future, creating hundreds of jobs in the local community.

"The kids that are here today are so excited for the future and the prospect that they can represent their home state on the national stage, while having their own team of players to aspire to be," Minister Duigan.

"But, without the stadium, there is no team and there is no high-performance centre here at Kingston – which would be a significant loss of opportunity to the local economy.

"This facility will be the home of the Tasmanian AFL team and is critical for our entry into the AFL.

"Kingborough will become home to hundreds of players and staffers, and their families.

"They will be living here in the community, working here, shopping here, raising their families here and – importantly - contributing to the local economy.

"This is just one of the investments the AFL team and Macquarie Point Precinct will secure for Tasmania.

"Having this facility in Kingborough builds a better Tasmania: now, and for the future. It ensures we have a strong economy by backing business and economic growth.

"It will provide a home to dozens of local sporting organisations and social clubs who will get to host games, events and meetings in state-of-the-art facilities for decades to come; bringing the community together.

Design work is nearly complete, with a development application expected to be lodged in coming months and a construction tender later this year.

The project is on track to achieve practical completion by 31 October 2027, as required under the AFL Agreement.
