Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding an act of animal cruelty where a koala was found dead with both of its ears cut off, Victoria Police say.
The koala was located on Hopkins Point Road, about 2 kilometres east of Hopkins Bridge, about 8.30am on 6 November.
It is believed the mutilation was recent but it has not yet been established whether the koala was deceased at the time.
Investigators have been told there has been a spate of similar mutilations involving kangaroos and wallabies, but understand this to be the first involving a koala.
The remains were first located by a SES worker.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen a vehicle or people in the vicinity.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
