Labor backs Tasmanian fishers

Tasmanian Labor
  • No new taxes or levies on recreational fishing
  • East Coast Rock Lobster access review and commercial net fishing licence buyback
  • Labor is working for Tasmanians to deliver healthy, active and better-connected communities
  • A majority Labor Government will back Tasmanian fishers.

Shadow Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Water Shane Broad said Labor will stand up for the right of Tasmanians to enjoy catching fish, with a number of policies designed to improve the experience of recreational fishers.

"Fishing is a large part of the Tasmanian economy and Labor is proud to support recreational fishers and ensure access to Tasmania's iconic coastal waters and estuaries," Dr Broad said.

"Labor will not introduce any new taxes or levies on recreational fishing and we will invest $2 million in better boat ramps and associated facilities.

"We will review rock lobster access on the East Coast for recreational fishers in consultation with industry and commit to no further cuts to individual bag, possession limits or season length.

"A majority Labor Government will create a $1.5 million fund to buy back commercial net fishing licences. This non-compulsory buy back will aim to increase fish stocks for recreational fishers and allow commercial net fishers to exit the industry if they wish.

"We will also invest $750,000 in a Flathead Recovery Plan to make sure future generations don't miss out on the great Tasmanian tradition of catching a flathead."

Dr Broad said Labor's Recreational Fishing Package included policies to benefit all recreational fishers.

"Labor will provide $1 million for four years for TARFish to provide an independent voice for the recreational fishing sector.

"And a majority Labor Government will develop and implement a 10-year recreational sea fishing strategy.

"Labor is working for Tasmanians to deliver healthy, active and better-connected communities."
