Labor fails community expectations again

Michael Ferguson,Leader of the House

Labor's refusal to support guaranteed jail time for child sex offenders, is a further indictment on their soft on crime approach.

Comments by Labor MLC Sarah Lovell, that the State Government is introducing our important mandatory sentencing reforms as a distraction is offensive and disrespectful to victims and survivors of child sex abuse.

Sentencing laws must serve to denounce violence and provide protection, instead Labor continues standing in the way of victims receiving appropriate justice for the crimes perpetrated against them.

These latest comments are a sign of how out of touch Labor is with community expectations, and they should be ashamed of their latest display of political point scoring.

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government has a strong record of protecting victims and especially survivors of child sexual abuse. This Government will continue to stand up for Tasmania's most vulnerable and fight to keep our community safe.
