Labor Fails To Keep Richmond Schoolchildren Safe

Liberal Party Victoria
Premier Allan has rejected the frustrated calls of the Richmond community and Yarra City Council to move the injecting room to keep children and the Richmond community safe.

Despite clear evidence of children exposed to unacceptable risk and dangerous behaviour and years of pleas from parents, teachers, traders and now Yarra City Council itself, Labor refuses to move the facility away from the Richmond West Primary School and nearby homes.

Deputy Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Mental Health, Emma Kealy, said Labor's arrogance is putting children at risk every single day.

"Families are heartbroken and frightened - schoolchildren are walking past drug deals, public drug use, sexual acts and even dead bodies on their way to class," Ms Kealy said.

Ms Kealy said Yarra City Council's decision to call for relocation was a clear reflection of the community's deep frustration, particularly towards children's safety.

"The Council has made the right call - now it's up to Premier Allan to do the same and put the safety of children first," Ms Kealy said.

"We've always said an injecting room should never have been built next door to a primary school. The site was destined for failure, and the Richmond community has paid the price.

"The question is simple: will Premier Allan acknowledge the problem, stand with local families and protect children, or will she keep defending Labor's dangerous mistake that puts children at risk every single day?

"Labor can't manage mental health and vulnerable Victorians are paying the price."

The Liberals and Nationals have always maintained that an injecting room should never be built next door to a primary school.
