  • Tasmania's tourism industry is taking a lead role in embracing the role of women in the industry.

Labor Leader Rebecca White today gave a vote of thanks to the second annual Tourism Collective, honouring women who work in the industry and exploring the challenges and opportunities they face.

Ms White said the event, hosted by the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania as part of International Women's Day, is a fantastic way to celebrate the contribution of women to the industry.

"Women make up 60 per cent of the workforce in the tourism and hospitality sectors in Tasmania," Ms White said.

"But, on average, they are paid less, work fewer hours and are represented in fewer leadership and representative positions.

"By highlighting this issue and the positive contribution women make, the TICT is empowering women to value their own role in this vital industry and take their careers to the next level.

"It's so important for women to know they have support in the industry and events like this help to reinforce that.

"It was a privilege to join today's inspiring guest speakers - Sarah Clark, the Tasmanian-born Managing Director of Intrepid Travel, and Anne Greentree from Tourism Tasmania, who is writing the Tasmanian tourism industry's new long-term industry plan.

"Labor is a vocal supporter of diversity and equality and will continue to support opportunities that facilitate this."
