Labor must come clean on backroom deals with Greens

Labor needs to release today, the full list of any amendments or changes to birth certificates that they plan to move or support, so Tasmanians can finally understand what Labor stands for.

Greens leader Cassy O’Connor has again confirmed that she had a backroom deal with Labor on taking gender off birth certificates.

"The most frustrating and offensive thing is, first of all, that they didn’t have the courtesy to call [me] or stand by their original conviction, and secondly they’re trying to make out it was all [the Greens]," Ms O’Connor told the Mercury today.

Ms O’Connor was responding to Labor’s attempts to distance themselves from what they’d previously supported and agreed behind the scenes with the Greens.

It’s clear Labor have told the Greens they support their position, and are now trying to tell Tasmanians that they don’t.

They’ve spent almost a month standing by their push to take gender off birth certificates, yesterday they tried to say they’ve backflipped, and today Ella Haddad says they are still pretty much on the same page as the Greens and need to "come together" with the Greens to finalise a "slight nuanced difference"* on the amendments they propose to move.

There is now less than two weeks to go before debate resumes on the Bill they tried to amend in the last sitting week and Labor’s position is clear as mud. There is no reason for Labor not to release their full list of amendments to the public today.
