Labor supports ban on mobile phones in schools

Tasmanian Labor
  • Banning mobile phones in schools will improve student wellbeing
  • Government must undertake proper consultation on the ban
  • Labor believes banning mobile phones in schools will have a positive impact on student wellbeing.

Shadow Minister for Education and Early Years, Josh Willie, said Labor supported the ban as long as proper consultation was undertaken.

"Labor has been supportive of banning mobile phones in schools since Victoria announced their policy earlier this year," Mr Willie said.

"It's important this change is undertaken in close consultation with the principals, teachers and the community and that teachers are given the resources they need to implement it.

"In my experience as a teacher, I have seen the positive and negative uses of mobile phones in schools.

"There is no doubt a ban will improve student wellbeing and I have observed that at New Town High School, which is in my electorate.

"This change compliments Labors policy to improve student wellbeing by providing a dedicated mental health worker in every school."
