Labor Takes $1.13B From TAC, Skips Road Safety Pledge

Liberal Party Victoria

The Allan Labor Government has raided $1.13 billion from the Transport Accident Commission - more than three times what it promised - and still won't commit to fixing crumbling roads or improving safety for Victorian road users.

In a Public Accounts and Estimates Committee hearing today, Labor was forced to admit it had taken the billion-dollar dividend despite budget papers claiming otherwise.

When asked if the money would be spent on road safety, the TAC said it was "for the government to decide".

Shadow Minister for Finance, Bridget Vallence, said: "Labor said it would take $300 million. Now it's taken $1.13 billion from the TAC - and there is still no guarantee a cent of this will go to fixing roads or saving lives."

"This government can't manage money, and Victorians are paying the price on our dangerous, deteriorating roads.

"Labor has wiped out the TAC's $1.04 billion surplus and is using road safety funds to paper over its budget failures."
