Labor welcomes deferral of State Budget

  • Good decision to defer the state budget
  • Government must focus on supporting Tasmanians
  • Labor calling for Legislative Council elections to be deferred
  • Labor Leader, Rebecca White, has welcomed news the Government is delaying the state budget because of COVID-19.

"We won't know by June what the full impacts of COVID-19 will be so it is important we wait to ensure we have a budget that can best help Tasmania to recover," Ms White said.

"Right now, we need to focus on measures to help protect Tasmanians from the impacts of COVID-19 and ensuring we immediately support people and businesses in these difficult times."

Ms White said the Government was making difficult decisions in the best interests of Tasmania, but more action was needed.

"One thing that needs urgent attention is the upcoming Legislative Council elections. We are calling on the Government to put public health over politics and defer the elections.

"At the time the elections fall due, in early May, we will likely be at the peak of the public health impact from COVID-19.

"People don't need to be distracted by elections right now, they need to be focused on their health and making sure they and their families can get through this together.

"We are calling on the state government to introduce amendments to the Act before the writs are issued on 30 March."
