NSW Labor Leader, Michael Daley, has today announced that a Daley Labor Government, if elected in March, will end unfair no-fault evictions in its first 100 days.
The one in three people in NSW that currently rent their home are being ignored by the Liberals and Nationals.
Under current laws, renters can be evicted for no reason, through no fault of their own.
Mr Daley said: "Labor will create a fairer, more stable rental market in NSW."
Labor's plan will see a fairer rental market including:
- Ending no-fault evictions, specifying a list of grounds determined through consultation with stakeholders;
- Introduce tenancies for up to five years in length in consultation with the industry; and
- Work towards longer term lease templates such as 12 month default tenancies.
"More and more people, especially in Sydney, are renting long-term. They deserve to feel safe and secure in their own homes, not scared to ask their landlord about maintenance requests," Mr Daley said.
This vital reform will mean renters will feel secure in their home and free from retaliatory actions of agents and landlords.
Despite widespread support from tenancy and welfare groups for reform, the Berejiklian Liberal-National Government has stubbornly refused to abolish no-fault evictions.
Shadow Minister for Better Regulation, Yasmin Catley, said: "Labor is bringing rental rules into the 21st century.
"More families than ever before are in the NSW rental market and they deserve stable homes."
Labor will work with landlords, tenants and industry stakeholders in coming up with a fair set of rules around grounds for evictions.
