Labor's Anti-gas Agenda Continues

Liberal Party Victoria

The Allan Labor Government is waging an ideological war on how Victorians cook, heat their homes, and manage their energy bills.

Despite the Premier's latest spin, the truth is clear: Labor is doubling down on its anti-gas agenda.

Labor has also:

  • Quietly scrapped rebates for replacing old gas appliances with new ones, even though nearly 60 per cent of gas appliances are Australian-made, compared to fewer than 5 per cent of electric ones.
  • Rejected Liberal and Nationals amendments to protect gas cooktops in law, exposing the truth: no appliance is safe from Labor's long-term agenda.
  • Released a "Substitution Roadmap" that will force households to replace broken gas heaters and hot water systems with electric alternatives, at a cost of at least $4,700 per home.

This is not support; it's compulsion.

Labor's plan isn't balanced, it's not affordable, and it's certainly not based on choice. It's being imposed from Spring Street, not chosen by families in their kitchens.

Even power companies like AusNet have warned that Labor's agenda will increase infrastructure costs, driving up bills for households already under pressure.

And now, things are getting worse:

  • In December 2024, Labor released a Regulatory Impact Statement exploring gas bans for not just new homes, but existing homes and commercial buildings.
  • It's scandalous that Labor cannot guarantee gas supply to industry. They cannot guarantee affordable and reliable supply, placing Victorian industry, manufacturing, and agriculture at extreme risk.

Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources, David Davis said: "Labor isn't reversing course; it's accelerating. The Premier's latest announcement is nothing more than a deception."

"If re-elected, Labor will kill household gas choice. Their so-called "transition" is more expensive, more unstable, and unreliable, undermining public and commercial confidence and threatening Victoria's energy and commercial security.

"Victorians deserve real choice, real affordability, and real energy security - not an ideological crusade dressed up as climate policy.

"The Liberals and Nationals will always back your right to cook with gas and your right to make energy choices that suit your home, your budget, and your way of life."
