Labor's Schools Tax punishes Victorian families

Liberal Party Victoria

Victorian families will be forced to pay more to send their children to independent schools because of Labor's new schools tax.

The tax announced in yesterday's state budget will add thousands of dollars to school fees by forcing independent schools to pay tax of up to 5.85 per cent of their payroll.

Independent schools have historically been exempt from payroll tax and this new tax hit will add further pressure to household bills for tens of thousands of Victorian families across the state.

Shadow Minister for Education, Matt Bach, said Labor is making life harder for Victorian families and punishing schools and students for their incompetence.

"Taxing independent schools is a step in the wrong direction and will only make life harder for Victorian families," Mr Bach said.

"The Andrews Labor Government must explain to the community which schools they intend to hit with their new schools tax and how much fees will rise as a consequence."
