Lake Illawarra jetty and foreshore works announced

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment today announced major repair plans for a number of jetties at Lake Illawarra in preparation for their reopening.

Five jetties will undergo structural renewal work to ensure they can be safely enjoyed by the local community.

Tuggerah Bay Jetty, Purry Burry Point Jetty, Koonawarra Bay Jetty and Old Merinda Wharf will have structural elements replaced as needed such as headstocks, joists, decks and other fittings.

Major repair and replacement works will also be undertaken on the King Street jetty and the boat skid ramp at Warrawong.

The upgrade work will allow the jetties, which are currently closed to the public due to safety concerns, to become fully operational.

Along with these repairs, some additional maintenance work on the lake foreshore at Northcliffe Drive, Warrawong will also be carried out.

The maintenance works will include upgrades to the markets' car park, the installation of security cameras and improvements to fencing in the area.

Upgrades will commence in June and are expected to be completed in October.

The Department consulted with the community on the jetty upgrade program over two stages last year.

More than 340 responses were received, with feedback used to inform priority works.

Last year, the NSW Government allocated $1.3 million from its COVID-19 stimulus for priority repairs and upgrades on Lake IIlawarra jetties managed by Crown Lands.

The Department allocated additional funding for the repair of the King Street jetty and boat skid ramp.

The next stage of the jetty upgrade program will be announced later, with further community consultation and assessments of environmental and planning requirements ongoing.
