Large operation, an Easter long weekend reminder

Today Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services the Honourable Mark Ryan MP joined Chief Superintendent Brian Swan at a large operation supporting the Easter road safety campaign at Kangaroo Point, Brisbane.

South Brisbane Officers conducted one of the many high-visibility operations happening across the state this Easter holiday period.

The extended Easter road safety campaign began on April 5 and runs until April 26 and as a part of that, the QPS is coordinating a state-wide traffic policing operation designed to reduce the number of serious injuries, fatal traffic crashes and road related crime.

This operation coincides with the Easter school holidays and a period in which there is an increase in vehicles using Queensland roads.

Chief Superintendent Swan said that over the Easter long weekend last year we lost four lives.

"It is tragic for both those families and for the families and friends of the 57 people who have died on Queensland roads so far in 2019," Chief Superintendent Swan said.

The Easter Road Safety campaign will continue to target the Fatal Five - speeding, drink/drug, fatigue, seat belt use and driver distraction/inattention.

There was a heavy focus today on reminding road users across Queensland to be conscious of the decisions they are making and the impacts those decisions could have on themselves, their loved ones and responding emergency services personnel.

Minister Mark Ryan said these decisions are life changing decisions.

"If you make a bad one, it won't just be a tragic outcome, it could be a fatal outcome," Minister Ryan said.

Police were out in force in South Brisbane today and will be across the state throughout the Easter long weekend.
