Last chance to nominate a Queensland Great!

The Premier has urged people to get their nominations in for the 2019 Queensland Greats Awards which is an important way to honour remarkable Queenslanders.

Nominations are closing on the 22 February.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said every year, as part of Queensland Day celebrations in June, the government recognises the efforts and achievements of remarkable individuals and organisations helping make Queensland a great state.

"From individuals to organisations, selfless acts of heroism, lifetime achievements and leaders in their fields – it's ordinary Queenslanders doing extraordinary things that truly makes Queensland great," the Premier said.

"I don't think we'll have to look hard this year given recent events and the extraordinary stories that have emerged.

"From long running droughts, catastrophic bushfires and unprecedented floods, these disasters have really tested us as a state.

"But where there is disaster, humans turn into heroes.

"I've heard the stories – now its time for us to recognise their actions and say thank you."

Since the program's inception in 2001, 90 individuals, 14 institutions and four posthumous recipients have been honoured as Queensland Greats.

Our 2018 Queensland Greats included:

  • Associate Professor within the Office of Indigenous Engagement, Central Queensland University, Ms Henrietta Marrie AM
  • Founder of Woodfordia Mr Bill Hauritz AM,
  • Equality activist Ms Gail Ker OAM,
  • Queensland baseball legend Mr David Nilsson;
  • and pioneering parenting academic Professor Matthew Sanders FASSA

The former Mayor of Winton, Graham 'Butch' Lenton, was also recognised with a posthumous award, and the St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland was acknowledged as the institution recipient.

"There are thousands of remarkable Queenslanders whose efforts to improve their communities deserve to be recognised and celebrated," the Premier said.

"It could be a friend, family member, colleague or even a community organisation—if you think they are helping to nurture the progress and development of our great State, I encourage you to nominate them."
