Latest CALD recruits show off their new uniforms

PhilShane Shanal (002)This week we commenced our first drill practice session. We looked towards some of our recruits with military backgrounds for aid in specific instructions and leadership. Once we became familiar with it, our group felt more in unison towards the end of the session. We were taught the importance in projecting our voice during parade and responding to the Sergeant’s commands efficiently. A phrase that our drill instructor repeated to us and that resonated with us was, Queensland Police say:

"We are taught to read and write, but rarely are we taught to listen".

We also learned to trust our peers while performing our drill movements as there were times when we could not see the people around us. This trust will cross over into our roles as operational police officers. With more practice we look forward to being involved in morning parade with the other squads.

Communication was one of our topics for the week. We utilised these skills during police radio training. Understanding the importance of being concise, clear and to the point. We identified that communication is embodied in many parts of our job and we use it to get our ideas, thoughts, symbols and feelings across. We learnt that appropriate communication at the beginning of every situation gives us the best opportunity to assist the community.

The anticipation of wearing our uniforms finally came to fruition. The morning was so exciting seeing our colleagues walk into the building looking like police officers. We helped each other reach the expected uniform standards as some of us had towel fluff, unpolished shoes and trouble fixing our belts! Teamwork got us through in the end. Our bright blue epaulettes identified our unique training program.

Stay tuned for our next update.
