Launch of Pacific Motorway Multipurpose Road Safety Sites

Fourteen multipurpose road safety sites will be rolled out along the Pacific Motorway today, with road safety camera trailers and Variable Message Sign (VMS) trailers set up alongside the Pacific Motorway, north and southbound between Beenleigh and Gaven.

These multipurpose road safety sites have been constructed behind barrier fencing to support road safety camera operations by speed camera vehicles and road safety camera trailers.

In addition, these zones will facilitate the operation of VMS trailers operated by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to advise motorists of changing traffic conditions including speed limit changes and road safety messages.

The sites will also provide static observations points for police while being protected by the barriers.

Analysis of road crash data indicated that the Pacific Motorway within these locations has a significantly high risk of casualty crashes each year.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said these safety sites were designed to assist in areas where it was unsafe to use traditional speed camera devices.

"These sites enable police to safely target high-end speeding motorists in high-risk zones which are traditionally unsafe for officer deployment," Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

"Operating road safety cameras at these sites will promote speed compliance to mitigate crashes and provide influence upon drivers using the Pacific Motorway to improve the traffic flow."

Assistant Commissioner Keating said police would continue to undertake a state-wide speed enforcement presence throughout the festive break.

"Traditionally, many people set-off on their Christmas break on December 23, leading to a high volume of traffic on our road network and an increased risk of traffic collisions," Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

"Motorists can expect a saturation of speed enforcement activity right across the state with police targeting drivers putting themselves and all other road users at risk just before Christmas."

The multipurpose road safety sites are intended to assist in the management of congestion, delivering improvement and reliability and safety on the Pacific Motorway in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

With the games fast approaching, the safe and reliable movement of athletes, officials and spectators between Brisbane and the Gold Coast is vital.

The installation of these road safety sites on the Pacific Motorway are a part of a suite of initiatives designed to reduce congestion, improve reliability and increase safety for those travelling on the Pacific Motorway during the Commonwealth Games period.

These sites will provide a footprint for the future installation of fixed road safety camera systems.
