Lawyers who offer free, high-quality legal advice wanted

  • Nominations for the 2019 Attorney General's Community Service Law Awards are now open
  • Individuals and legal organisations to be recognised for their free assistance
  • Attorney General John Quigley is inviting legal practices, practitioners and community organisations to nominate candidates for the 2019 Attorney General's Community Service Law Awards.

Presented as part of WA Law Week in May, the two law awards recognise one individual legal practitioner and one organisation which have provided outstanding pro bono legal services to the Western Australian community.

The 2018 individual law award winner was David Blades. Mr Blades is a legal advocate for asylum seekers who was recognised for his commitment to helping a marginalised and largely unrepresented group in the community, and for approaching his pro bono work with vigour and an unwavering commitment to justice.

Tenancy WA was recognised in the 2018 organisational category for providing specialist legal advice, representation and education to women and children, particularly those facing family violence and who are therefore at greater risk of homelessness than others in the community.

Nominations must be received by the Department of Justice by 2pm on April 15, 2019.

As stated by Attorney General John Quigley:

"Providing pro bono legal assistance is a key way in which individual lawyers and organisations can use their legal expertise to facilitate greater access to justice for Western Australians.

"There are many outstanding individuals and organisations across our State who have demonstrated a commitment to ensuring all members of our community have access to legal representation.

"I commend them for their passion and enthusiasm. Between them, they contribute countless hours in pro bono legal work to our community every single day.

"These awards publicly acknowledge these individual lawyers and legal organisations and I urge them to put in a nomination, or to nominate someone they believe is worthy of these awards, before the closing date."
