Leadership Explored: Experience & Insight

Department of Defence

The Australian Defence College (ADC) has launched a new podcast series, Lives in Leadership, hosted on The Forge.

The podcast features candid conversations with leaders from Defence, government, industry and academia, exploring leadership, ethics, culture and service within the Profession of Arms.

Commander of the Australian Defence College Rear Admiral James Lybrand said this initiative supported professional development across Defence by offering accessible, experience-driven insights into leadership in complex operational and strategic environments.

"Through these discussions, Lives in Leadership aims to strengthen leadership capability across the Australian Defence Force by fostering a deeper understanding of the human dimensions of command," Rear Admiral Lybrand said.

The first episode, released on October 14, features Rear Admiral (retd) Lee Goddard in conversation with Lucas Marie, Head of Cross-Cultural Education at ADC.

In a reflective and compelling dialogue, Rear Admiral Goddard challenges traditional leadership narratives and highlights the importance of empathy, connection and continuous growth.

"Leadership is about knowing your people," he says.

"When you join the Defence Force, essentially at some stage we are all leaders."

The podcast series begins with an initial season comprising 10 episodes, with episodes one, two and three available now via The Forge, Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

New episodes will be released weekly, including upcoming conversations with previous Jeffrey Grey Visiting Chairs in Defence Studies at the ADC, Florence Gaub and David Whetham.
