Today I am thrilled to announce that our very own Executive Director of Cultural Reform, Leanne Liddle was honoured as the recipient of the 2026 NT NAIDOC Person of the Year at the NAIDOC Ball on Saturday.
Leanne, a proud Arrernte woman from Alice Springs, has forged a career of leadership in justice reform, policing and human rights over more than 35 years and few will find a more deserving recipient of such a prestigious award.
She became the first Aboriginal policewoman in South Australia, breaking systemic barriers in a traditionally exclusionary institution.
Her leadership continues to be recognised nationally, including her appointment as Deputy Chancellor of Flinders University, appointments to the AFL First Nations Advisory Committee and the Board of NT/SA Royal Flying Doctor Service.
In 2022 Leanne was awarded Northern Territory Australian of the Year.
Since being appointed to her current position in 2024, she has become a leader of policing reform, designing and delivering the Anti-Racism Strategy and Action Plan 2025-2027, the first of its kind for NT Police.
Through her leadership, Leanne has consistently aligned with NAIDOC values including truth-telling, self-determination, cultural authority and community empowerment.
