Learner-driver charged after tyre explodes during burnout, NSW

A learner-driver has been charged – and his vehicle defected – after it’s tyre exploded during a burnout on a western Sydney street last month., NSW Police say

Police will allege a 24-year-old man performed the burnout in a black Holden Commodore about 3.10pm on Sunday 23 September 2018 on Quarry Road, Erskine Park.

It will be further alleged the Commodore had tyres fitted that are manufactured with a compound that emits coloured smoke; the man performed doughnuts and fishtails before one of its tyres exploded.

Officers attached to Strike Force Puma commenced an investigation and on Thursday 4 October 2018 stopped a Commodore driving along Luxford Road, Whalan.

After the vehicle was inspected, the 24-year-old male driver, who was the holder of NSW Learner Driver Licence, was issued with infringement notices for issues with the suspension, items protruding from the bonnet and not display L plates.

The vehicle was grounded through a red-label defect notice.

Following further inquiries, the man was also issued a Future Court Attendance Notice for two counts of being an two counts of being an unaccompanied learner, and one count of performing an aggravated burnout. He is due to appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday 27 November 2018.

The man’s Learner Driver licence has been suspended.

Inquiries are continuing.
