LED streetlights brighten Brimbank's major roads and slash bills

Brimbank City Council has started to replace over 4000 of Brimbank's streetlights on its major roads with more energy efficient LED lighting technology.

The $3.4 million project will be completed by late 2022 and deliver around $6 million saving in net energy, maintenance and repair costs over 20 years. It will result in a better, brighter quality of lighting on our busy major roads.

This project is a key action in Council's Climate Emergency Plan and Revised Greenhouse Reduction Strategy 2013-2023.

The Climate Emergency Plan commits Council to achieving zero net emissions by 2030 and this project is an important step in that direction.

The lights will be very efficient, very effective, and powered by 100% renewable electricity.

Quotes to be attributed to Brimbank Mayor Cr Ranka Rasic:

"Brimbank is making environmentally sustainable choices when it comes to Council's operations. Our community expect no less from us, and it is the right thing to do.

"By using LED streetlights, Council will dramatically reduce the amount of electricity used, and what is uses will be 100% renewable energy.

"This is a win-win project for the environment and Council's bottom line.

"Council stands to save more than $6 million in energy and street lighting operating costs over the next 20 years by making this technology upgrade.

"We know from consulting with our community that this is what they want from us, and it is the right thing to do now and for future generations."
