Levelling the Playing Field for Sport in Queensland

The results are in – Queenslanders want a level playing field for sports participation.

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said over the past three months more than 4,000 Queenslanders have had their say about the future of sport and active recreation in our state.

"As part of community consultation for the Palaszczuk Government’s Sports and Active Recreation Strategy, I’ve met some amazing Queenslanders with inspirational stories," Mr de Brenni said.

"What’s become abundantly clear is Queensland wants change and an end to inequality when it comes to the relationship between family income and kids’ participation in sport."

Consultation on the Palaszczuk Government’s Sports and Active Recreation Strategy saw 1,944 online surveys and 1,749 postcard surveys completed, in addition to face-to-face feedback from more than 500 Queenslanders.

The survey found 80 percent of kids from families with incomes of $200,000 take part in sport regularly, but for low income families the participation rate was halved.

"For girls, participation in sport is even less and we’re already working to level that playing field," Mr de Brenni said.

"The Palaszczuk Government’s Female Facilities Program has delivered $15 million for 45 clubs from 17 different codes to build new and upgraded infrastructure to support girls to get into the game."

Among the projects made possible by the Female Facilities Program include 112 changerooms, 315 showers, 14 parent rooms, 30 changerooms for officials, 15 first-aid rooms and amenities for disabled athletes.

"The survey’s feedback has also identified some excellent ideas on how we can strengthen community engagement, boost jobs and economic growth, and support our elite athletes to perform at their best," the Minister said.

"Just as important is the role of grass-roots sport in delivering better outcomes on physical and mental health, and youth justice.

"From mums and dads to Paralympians and the Broncos premiership winning NRLW team, I want to thank everybody who has contributed to what will be Queensland’s first Sports and Active Recreation Strategy.

"Together, we’re building a healthier, more equitable Queensland and nurturing the athletes of the future."
