  • An elected Liberal Government will lock-in international flights out of Hobart Airport by committing to the maintenance of an Australian Border Force presence at the Airport until at least 2029.

"The Australian Border Force (ABF) plays a critical role in the delivery of International flight services at our nation's airports, including Hobart," Senator Chandler said.

"Importantly, our commitment is to maintain the ABF presence at Hobart Airport within the existing footprint, without the need for additional space.

"This recognises the unique place that Hobart Airport holds, and the need to provide a fit-for-purpose ABF presence which will help to facilitate existing and future international flights into Asia."

Senator Chandler said with the $130 million strengthening of the Hobart Airport on track to be completed mid-year, as well as the $200 million terminal expansion, the Liberals are pleased to be able to commit to an appropriate ABF presence to enable the airport to expand its international services.

"With Air New Zealand returning after their seasonal break with direct flights to Auckland in October, as well as the impending runway upgrade completion, our commitment will provide Hobart Airport with the certainty they need to now pursue additional direct flights into Asia.

"This is good news for Tasmanian travellers, and particularly good news for our exporters and our visitor economy."

Senator Chandler said that today's announcement is another important element of the Liberals' plan for Tasmania and to get Australia Back on Track.
