The first ever direct route between Launceston and Canberra will begin on May 6.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government has delivered this new year-round service in partnership with Launceston Airport and Link Airways.
The new route marks Link Airways' first time flying to Launceston, providing direct access to the nation's capital without transiting through Melbourne or Sydney.
Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events, Jane Howlett, said this significant development will increase Tasmania's aviation capacity by 14,000 seats annually.
"Aviation access and capacity are vital to Tasmania," Minister Howlett said.
"This service opens the door to a significant catchment from ACT and surrounding regions who have shown strong appetite for what Northern Tasmania has to offer, from our UNESCO City of Gastronomy status in Launceston, the Tamar Valley wine region, proximity to wilderness experiences and rich history and heritage.
"Tasmania's tourism brand is strong, and it is important that we continue this momentum as competition in the tourism market intensifies.
"This direct flight increases our capacity in shoulder and winter months, perfectly aligning with our Off Season campaign designed to drive visitation during May through August.
"It also comes off the back of our announcement to support the delivery of a new, purpose-built convention centre in Launceston."
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said the new year-round service to Canberra is a tremendous vote of confidence in Tasmania as a destination.
"We are proud to work with Launceston Airport and Link Airways to support this new route, providing direct access to our nation's capital four days a week," Minister Vincent said.
"The new direct flights have been secured with support from the Tasmanian Government's Aviation Attraction Fund, which leverages opportunities like this to support our tourism industry and grow our economy.
"Tasmania welcomed 60,000 visitors from the ACT and surrounding regions last year and we expect this to grow.
"Our Liberal Government is delivering for Tasmanians by ensuring we have viable air services that are convenient for people."
Link Airways will operate return services on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
The service is code-shared with Virgin Australia, allowing passengers to connect with other Virgin flights and earn Velocity points on all Link Airways flights.
Flights are on sale now starting at $339 and can be booked directly on Link Airways website or via travel agents.
