Literacy Advisory Panel appointed

Peter Gutwein,Premier

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to improving educational outcomes in Tasmania as it is the single most powerful driver for improving social and economic outcomes, including health, life expectancy, happiness, and productivity.

That's why we announced the establishment of an expert Literacy Advisory Panel earlier this year that will oversee the development of a community-wide framework to achieve a Literate Tasmania.

Following an Expression of Interest process, I am pleased to announce the membership of the Panel. Work is already underway ahead of the first meeting on September 16 2021.

The Panel is co-chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Jenny Gale and Professor Natalie Brown, Director of the Peter Underwood Centre for Educational Attainment

Other members of the Panel include:

  • Anne Bayetto
  • Brendan Gill
  • Jane Bovill
  • Sally Rowlands
  • Courtney Dunbabin
  • Lucy Whitehead
  • Dr Kate De Bruin
  • Jodee Wilson

The Panel will review current literacy programs and supports across the community and make recommendations to improve our approach as we work towards achieving our aspirational goal of 100 per cent functional literacy in Tasmania.

The Government provided $300,000 in the 2021-22 budget to support this important work, and I look forward to the Panel providing me with a community-wide framework by 30 June 2022 to achieve a Literate Tasmania.
