Literacy improvement needs action, not just words

  • Labor welcomes Government's focus on literacy
  • Inaction over past 7 years questioned
  • Where are the resources to back the strategy?
  • Labor welcomes today's commitment from the Liberal Government to improve literacy rates for Tasmanian students.

Labor Shadow Minister for Education, Josh Willie, said today's announcement draws on the good work of the Tasmanian #100 per cent Literacy Alliance.

"There is no doubt that action to improve Tasmania's literacy rates is well and truly overdue," Mr Willie said.

"The Liberals have been in Government for seven years and have delivered no improvement to literacy rates - in fact our results have been getting worse.

"The latest figures from Australia's national tool for assessing educational attainment – NAPLAN - highlights that Tasmania's performance is going backwards against half of the indicators across Grades 3,5,7 and 9.

"Jeremy Rockliff has announced yet another target - but he hasn't been able to deliver results.

"So while today's announcements are welcome, they need to be backed by additional resources and teachers must be adequately supported to deliver the new program in classrooms."
