Lithgow St. Upgrades Boost Safety, Traffic Flow

Works will soon begin on a new roundabout and raised pedestrian crossing in Beveridge aimed at improving traffic flow, pedestrian safety and overall road conditions in one of the area's busiest precincts.

The project will be delivered in three stages and will affect Lithgow Street and Patterson Road near the Mandalay Early Learning Centre and Greater Beveridge Community Centre. The works are funded by the Victorian Government's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program and Mitchell Shire Council.

What's happening?

  • Stage 1: Construction of an interim roundabout with traffic islands at the intersection of Lithgow Street and Patterson Road. This will help improve traffic flow and reduce safety risks at the intersection.
  • Stage 2: Lithgow Street, between Patterson Road and the Mandalay Circuit roundabout, will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with additional parallel parking installed on-street. The reduction to one lane is aimed at reducing speeding, which has been a persistent issue in the area.
  • Stage 3: A new raised pedestrian priority crossing will be constructed next to the Greater Beveridge Community Centre (near Mantel Green), providing safer access for pedestrians, particularly families and children accessing the Centre.

When?

Works are expected to begin the week starting 25 August, with completion anticipated by the end of October (weather permitting). The working hours will be 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and if required 9am to 4pm Saturday.

Traffic impacts

  • Traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place throughout the site. Drivers should expect delays and plan ahead. Access for emergency services and to residential properties, businesses and community facilities will be maintained.
  • No right turns will be allowed across the centre of the Lithgow and Patterson Road intersection during the Stage 1 roundabout construction. Detours will be in place via the Mandalay Circuit roundabout and a turnaround point at Igenia Lifestyle.
  • There will be partial lane closures at the Lithgow Street and Mantel Green intersection with detours via the Mandalay Circuit roundabout.
  • There will also be partial lane closures of Lithgow Street during the Spring school holiday period for asphalt works. Further updates will be provided to the community once dates of these works are confirmed.
  • A temporary pedestrian crossing will be available during Stages 2 and 3 while the permanent crossing is under construction.
