The Tasmanian Government's $130 million expansion of the Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department is progressing, delivering improved facilities and greater capacity to support the growing healthcare needs of the Tasmanian community.
To enable the next stage of these important works to be completed safely, the Liverpool Street driveway will be temporarily closed to vehicles from Friday 9 October 2026 until Sunday 20 December 2026.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the temporary change will support construction of an expanded Emergency Department, helping ensure more Tasmanians can access timely, high-quality emergency care when they need it most.
"We are building an even better health system through our $130 million investment into the Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department expansion," Minister Archer said.
"The Royal Hobart Hospital will remain open throughout the works, with access to key clinical services maintained."
Patients, visitors and staff will be supported with clear wayfinding and alternative access arrangements while this essential upgrade is delivered.
The Liverpool Street entrance will remain accessible to pedestrians via a temporary walkway with signs in place to help pedestrians access the hospital safely.
Patients and visitors who need an accessible drop-off or pick-up, or anyone who needs to be dropped off or picked up at a hospital entrance, should use the Campbell Street entrance.
Additional amenities have been included at the Campbell Street entrance to support patients, staff and visitors during the access changes, including CCTV and intercom for after-hours access, coordinated with lift access to the Royal Hobart Hospital campus.
There will be no change to access to the Emergency Department on Argyle Street. A public drop-off zone and dedicated ambulance zone are in place outside the Emergency Department entrance on Argyle Street.
Access between the Royal Hobart Hospital and Wellington Clinics via the Level 3 airbridge will remain available from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
