Loaded firearm seized, man charged in Newcastle

A man has been charged after he was caught allegedly carrying a loaded firearm in Newcastle overnight, NSW Police say.

Police were called to a hotel on Steel Street about 11.30pm (Saturday 6 October 2018), after a man reported he had been threatened with a firearm by another patron.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended and spoke with a 28-year-old man.

The man was arrested after a loaded firearm was alledegly found in his pants.

The Merewether man was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with:

  • Possess prohibited firearm;
  • Intimidate intend fear, physical or mental harm;
  • Possess loaded firearm in public place;
  • Possess unregistered firearm – pistol; and,
  • Not keep firearm safely – pistol

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Bail Court today (Sunday 7 October 2018).
