Local builders donate $7k toward much-needed youth project

Local G.J Gardner Homes Taree owners Ian and Cheryl Gray have donated a whopping $7,000 toward a brand-new skate park which they say will be an enormous gain for the Hallidays Point community.

Cheryl Gray, who has a history in Community Service work prior to taking on the G.J. Gardner Homes Taree office, has a keen interest for providing the local Hallidays Point neighbourhood with a skate park which she says is so important for the youths of the area.

“I formed a committee years ago and tried to get the skate park to happen but unfortunately I couldn’t get the support and many others who tried after me also failed.

“These kids are our future and there are no spaces in our community for them to hang out and have fun. We are 20 kilometres away from anything, so it’s really important we can give them a place they can enjoy together and just be kids,” Cheryl said.

The donation to the skate park came about when the Hallidays Point Lions Club asked Ian if he could help move a war memorial to another spot. Ian offered to donate his time and do the job free of charge, however the Hallidays Point Lions Club was given a grant for the work so needed to pass the money on.

“That’s when we decided to donate the money back as a contribution to the construction of the Hallidays Point Community Skatepark. It’s currently in its design phase but it sounds like they have some big plans.

“There’s a whole community around skateboarding and the current Hallidays Point Skate Park committee are hard at work accessing funding and grants to make the project come alive.

The Mid-Coast Council has provided funding for the concept design works for the skate park and the community is currently waiting for the skate park design company to get the project started.
