Local community asked to help shape new Bay Trail sculpture
Kingston Arts is seeking expressions of interest from the community to participate in creative consultation workshops with artist Deb McNaughton, who is working on an exciting new artwork to be installed along the Bay Trail, as part of the Bay Trail Public Art Project.
The new sculpture will be a nod to the temporal 'Rainbow of Hope' mural Deb recently painted at Shirley Burke Theatre in Parkdale, that received an overwhelming positive response from the local community as it celebrated the unity and connection demonstrated amongst Kingston residents in the face of social distancing rules.
Anyone who lives, works or frequents the Mentone, Parkdale or Mordialloc foreshore is encouraged to get involved in the creative workshops on Saturday 28 November and help shape this new art project.
Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said this was a great opportunity for the local community to get involved in an exciting new public art project.
"The Bay Trail is a fantastic new pedestrian and recreational cycling path and we have loved seeing the community out there enjoying it, this new sculpture will add a real point of interest for visitors to our beautiful foreshore and we can't wait to see the artwork installed," said Cr Staikos.
The sculptural rainbow will feature a series of individual 3-meter-high galvanised steel posts that create the optical illusion of a colourful rainbow for those walking, driving or riding along or next to the Bay Trail.
Through the creative workshops the artist will work with the community to explore the significance of the rainbow as a universal sign of hope and come up with words/colours/campaigns/names or imagery important to the community. These will then be celebrated on the final sculpture.
