Loch-Wonthaggi Road upgrades on way

Loch-Wonthaggi Road will be closed between West Creek Road and Heslop Road from Tuesday, 14 January to mid-March, while significant road construction and flood mitigation works are carried out.

Road users will need to use either Archies Creek Road, West Creek Road or Heslop Road throughout the duration of the closure, however local landowners will be able to access their properties at all times. Emergency vehicle access to all properties will also be maintained at all times.

Loch-Wonthaggi Road requires these upgrades to improve the condition and safety of the road, which provides a vital commuter link between residents in South Gippsland and Baw Baw regions and the regional centre of Wonthaggi. This road is also a major strategic freight and transport route for larger vehicles servicing the dairy, agriculture and extraction industry.

Council was successful in securing funding from the State Government through the Fixing Country Roads Program to support this project. This program invests in improving the state of regional roads to enhance safety, connectivity and efficiency for regional road users. The project cost will be in the order of $1.5 million and includes $1million from the State Government program Fixing Country Roads.

The works will involve major earthworks for drainage, including clearing of some vegetation for culvert works, the installation of culvert drainage with rock beaching, to reduce flooding along a section of road where the Powlett River crosses, up to 500 metres of road upgrade, spray sealing works, including the replacement of the existing road safety guard rail and new signage and linemarking as required.

Council appreciates that these works will present a significant inconvenience to all road users and residents of the Loch-Wonthaggi Road and asks for patience throughout the works.

Appropriate traffic control measures, including electronic message signs will be displayed onsite prior to, and throughout the duration of these works. Road users will need to use the road detour routes during the construction period. Please plan your trip accordingly. To keep up to date with the project, visit www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/projects
