We recognise that lower Crown Street needs some love and attention. That's why from mid-September, Council will be upgrading the footpath along the pedestrian strip.
This project will be done in two phases, with Stage 1 starting this week with upgrades to the south side of lower Crown Street between Kembla Street and Corrimal Street. Stage 1 is expected to be completed by the end of the year, depending on weather conditions.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that this was a much-needed project that would replace the current footpath with more contemporary paving.
"Outside of lockdown restrictions, residents will have seen that the Wollongong CBD has become a thriving space for businesses, cafes and local bars," Cr Bradbery said.
"This section of Crown Street needs attention and refurbishment because, like the rest of Crown Street, it is one of the busiest pedestrian routes between the railway station and the Blue Mile.
"Stage 1 of the project aims to finish by the end of the year, and we'll expect to start stage 2 works, with improvements on the north side of the road, after the busy summer period."
Stage 2 of the footpath improvements will involve works along the north side of Lower Crown Street from Kembla Street to Corrimal Street. As part of stage 2, we'll build an at grade pedestrian crossing near Ethel Hayton Walkway to improve community safety.
"The lower Crown footpath upgrades is a big project and will take some time to complete. Council thanks our residents and business owners for their patience and understanding as we undertake this important project," Cr Bradbery said.
"We're keen to get started on this project as we know it will have a real positive impact on businesses, community members and visitors who share the space."
This project follows the recent works completed along lower Crown Street as part of the Wollongong CBD pop-up cycleway project, that saw kerb ramps, new safety road cushions and line marking installed.
