Machete Ban Urged After Violent Weekend

Liberal Party Victoria

Over the long weekend, Victoria has witnesses no less than three violent machete attacks. How much more evidence does the Allan Labor Government need before they get these dangerous weapons out of the hands of violent attackers?

Shadow Minister for Police, David Southwick, has renewed urgent calls for an immediate ban on the possession of machetes following a terrifying weekend of violence in Melbourne.

According to reports today, a teenager was slashed in a brutal machete attack at a suburban service station, leaving the community shaken and demanding action. This follows a disturbing pattern of machete related violence that continues to plague our streets.

Just two weeks ago, Labor voted to delay a ban on machetes for another four months, despite growing public concern and repeated warnings from law enforcement and community leaders.

Shadow Minister for Police, David Southwick MP said: "Victorians deserve to feel safe in their own neighbourhoods. The time for excuses is over. We need decisive action to get these weapons off our streets - now.

"This is yet another horrifying example of why dangerous weapons like machetes have no place in our community.

"The opposition remains ready to work with the Government to bring the immediate ban forward from September to get these dangerous machetes off the streets.

"Events this weekend reconfirm that Labor can't manage community safety and Victorians are paying the price."
