The Tasmanian Government is committed to ensuring an effective and efficient justice system for all Tasmanians.
The Department of Justice received $6 million to complete a range of projects as part of our Government's $50 million Public Buildings Maintenance Fund (PBMF), announced as part of our response to COVID-19.
Almost $400,000 in works to upgrade infrastructure across the Magistrates Court sites around Tasmania are currently progressing.
Aging air conditioning units in the Hobart, Launceston and Devonport Courts are all being replaced and the contracts have been awarded to local firm Contact Electrical, with work expected to be completed by the end of October.
Contact Electrical has also been awarded a separate contract to upgrade the switchboards in the Hobart Magistrates Court building, with work due to commence soon.
These projects, valued at almost $350,000, are amongst a number of initiatives which the Tasmanian Government is undertaking to upgrade court and prison infrastructure across the State.
Upgrades to the Launceston Magistrates Court's Protected Witness Room and Family Violence Waiting Room will commence in the coming weeks, while further electrical work to upgrade switchboards at the Launceston site has recently been completed. These two projects, with a combined value of over $40,000, were also funded through the PBMF.
These projects are providing a valuable stimulus to the local building and construction sector as Tasmania recovers and rebuilds from COVID-19, while also addressing important maintenance needs and enhancing court and prison infrastructure.
