Townsville City Council is working to make Magnetic Island's popular walking trails a bigger drawcard for tourists.
The Planning and Development Committee has endorsed the Magnetic Island Trails Vision Plan – which will link the Island's major attractions.
Planning and Development Committee Chair Deputy Mayor Les Walker said Council is working with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).
"The Island has some amazing walking trails and the Magnetic Island Trails Vision Plan will enhance the experience," Cr Walker said.
"Simple things like making starting points clearer and connecting all the trails will increase the potential of the network and attract more tourists.
"The tracks are already popular and these improvements will make them safer and bring more tourists to Magnetic Island.
"The Magnetic Island Trails Vision Plan is also about understanding how we should invest money to produce the best outcomes."
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said Council is working closely with QPWS.
"The bush walking tracks are an important asset and this collaboration will ensure we have the best network possible," Cr Greaney said.
"We can eliminate any missing links between Council and QPWS trails.
"The tracks are one of the most popular tourism activities in the region so the Magnetic Island Trails Vision Plan will benefit local and regional businesses.
"It gives us the potential to plan a world-class trails network and provide a memorable tropical experience.
"The Plan will improve the current network and highlight tracks that will need upgrades going forward."
