Major Events Surging in Comeback Capital

The Northern Territory's reputation as the nation's Comeback Capital has never been stronger with new research showing eight major events generated almost $110 million in economic expenditure across the Territory.

Major events including Parrtjima, BASSINTHEGRASS, Red CentreNATS, Merlin Darwin Triple Crown Supercars and more delivered $64.9 million of new money and generated 257,590 visitor nights in 2020/2021

The economic activity generated by these events have supported the equivalent of 433 full-time jobs.

This economic success story was only made possible due to the Territory Labor Government's successful management of the COVID-19 pandemic, with data showing 95% of people felt safe attending NTMEC events.

Million Dollar Fish reeled in major cash for the Territory with $41.41 million of stimulus to the local economy, including $12 million of new money.

Parrtjima – A Festival in Light 2021 proved to be a massive hit, generating $11.55 million for the Territory, including $9.9 million of new money.

BASSINTHEGRASS was one of the first music festivals to take place in the country during the pandemic and delivered $14.5 million in economic stimulus for the Territory, including $12 million of new money.

This year's Darwin Triple Crown Supercars event broke records as the biggest yet and delivered an economic stimulus of $23 million, increasing 29.9 per cent from 2019.

Feedback from people who attended major events in the Territory was overwhelmingly positive, showing 96 per cent support for the Territory Government to continue backing major events.

The Territory Labor Government is determined to back the arts, culture and events industries.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has hit these industries hard, their contribution to our lifestyle, cultural awareness and economy are invaluable.
