Major Improvements To School Crossing Safety Delivered

  • Speed limits dropped at more than 100 warden-controlled crossings around the State
  • Changes follow the 40 kilometres per hour speed limit being expanded to warden crossings outside designated school zones
  • Changes are part of a $10 million program to expand 40kmh speed zones for schools
  • Electronic signage to gradually replace static signage on all roads where speeds are 60kmh and above

Main Roads has reached a major milestone with new speed zones now in place at all 142 Children's Crossings found outside of existing School Zones or 40 kilometres per hour areas.

The new 40kmh speed zones will apply during standard School Zone hours - 7.30am to 9am and 2.30pm to 4pm on school days, ensuring consistency and enhancing safety for children and traffic wardens during pick-up and drop-off times.

The lowered speed limits aim to improve safety and encourage children and parents to choose walking, cycling and other active transport modes when travelling to school.

The changes are part of a four-year $10 million program to improve safety at children's crossings and will also see static signage gradually replaced with electronic signs at sites where speed limits exceed 60kmh.

To date, 17 schools have had Electronic Speed Limit Signage installed with 25 more planned by June 2026.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"This program is all about ensuring improved safety for our kids and families heading to school, as well as the wardens who carry out such a vital role in our community.

"Pedestrian safety, especially the safety of children, is a critical issue, and initiatives like this help make our communities safer whilst encouraging our children and parents to walk to and from schools.

"Whilst many sites will have electronic signage installed in the coming years, motorists are reminded that 40kmh speed limits now apply to all Children's Crossings across Western Australia to protect our children, parents and wardens."

As stated by Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby:

"School children, their families, and traffic wardens now have increased safety going to and from school under these new changes.

"Our communities, particularly school kids, are now safer during the busiest times of the day with new electronic signage and an expansion of the 40kmh school zones.

"This $10 million dollar program comes from the Road Trauma Trust Account, meaning valuable fines from speed and red-light cameras are going towards improving road safety."

As stated by Belmont MLA Cassie Rowe:

"This is a fantastic program that is making the school commute safer for students, families and wardens right across the State.

"The crossing on Orrong Road is used by countless students and families every day and reducing the speed limit during school drop off and pick up is going to make the commute safer for everyone."
